  1. Nice to be back, in reviewing past thirteen thoughts some of those gathering of thoughts still seem topical, others seem like MySpace in a TikTok world. . .
  2. Reddit has made a comeback in these parts and I am not sure why. It feels like it has the most accurate pulse for my community. Today marks the end of our election cycle with our civic and school board elections a lot of pertinent information about candidates and affiliations has ended up on Reddit.
  3. Is local journalism dead? Are we on the verge of community sourced journalism? Our local newspaper which services a community of 242,000 people is down to four journalists. At one time the sports department at this newspaper had upwards of six journalists. This same newspaper does not even print in the same city and is on the verge of being printed out of province.
  4. This same newspaper jettisoned their business reporters ages ago,  these former employees have turned it into a new website that is subscription driven and is some of the best journalism in the province. Content cannot be shared with screen captures or the like and maybe AllSaskatchewan got it right where others got it wrong with the subscription model?
  5. Speaking of community journalism and that term loosely applies to a garbage company in my community, it is considered a news source through their social media. They lack journalistic principle and with the recent provincial and civic elections have shown a very obvious bias including some rage baiting towards LGBTQ+/LGBTQ2S+ and people supporting Palestine. Can they be stopped or reigned in? Ownership of the garbage company seems unwilling and ignores the criticism and potential lawsuits. So how this plays out will be interesting.
  6. This was a slow election cycle for thirteen letter we helped one candidate in Saskatoon prepare their brand for a council seat. They are a great candidate who understands the function of council and will benefit the city. Immediately out of the gate their hot button topic was a new arena downtown and their view on it.  After that it became bike lanes and not knocking on enough doors.
  7. Jeff Marek has long been one my favourite sports journalists. He announced his comeback after a very weird and hush-hush departure from Sportsnet. This announcement was brilliant, it is one part tribute to his past and a clear look at what the future can be. Take a look at the two videos they work on both formats of portrait (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DCE7oUaOaIg/?igsh=MTl0cHV2Y2dycGwyag== ) and horizontal (https://x.com/jeffmarek/status/1854554766375899244?s=61&t=b02l-nvJ59njIakpKnVJ0Q) and is framed perfectly. Kudos Jeff and welcome back!
  8. Threads was announced in July 2023 and has lingered in the shadows for the past sixteen months. Is it Instagram? Is it Twitter? What is it? Well more words, less toxic, less ads and a good storytelling platform. Is it functional for business use? Maybe, it hasn’t had an “overwhelming made this business the next big brand success”, as of yet. Have you tried Threads? If so what are your thoughts on it?
  9. TikTok Canada, so they have been forced to close their Canadian offices over security concerns. https://www.forbes.com/sites/emmawoollacott/2024/11/07/tiktok-shut-down-in-canada-over-security-concerns/

The app is still functional in Canada they just have no offices for now. The big loser in this? Commercial real estate offices in Vancouver…
  10. Will people ever stop trying to post links in an Instagram post?
  11. Email marketing, even with spam is it dead? My clients have not stopped having success with email marketing. I think one of the key considerations though is frequency. I have been on and off some major and not so major brands lists. Some I joined out of curiosity, some of out love for the product or service. I find myself leaving the lists that send me to many emails.  What makes a good email list for you?
  12. OCR have you paid attention to how good optical character recognition has become? The newest phone in these parts is an iPhone 15 pro and the amount of text it can recognize and copy is pretty impressive.  So functional and so useful.
